Take the stump, get a thicket

The community took its name from the beeches that were here before the town site was, and plenty of them are still standing along Highway 10 and back off Beech Hill Lane. Beech is a fine shade tree and a genuine nuisance to remove properly.

Cut a beech down and the root system refuses to accept it. Suckers come up off the lateral roots, often twenty and thirty feet from where the trunk stood, and by the following July there is a stand of knee-high beech across a lawn that used to be grass.

The people who call us are usually in year two. The stump got ground, the job looked finished, and now they are mowing a nursery.

Why grinding the stump alone does not stop beech

The energy is not stored in the stump. It is out along the lateral roots, and every one of those roots can throw a shoot once the crown is gone. Take the collar out and you have removed the obvious wood and left the network intact and unhappy.

What works is a combination. Grind wide - well past the visible buttress - and trace and sever the major surface laterals leaving the stump, so the sprouting roots are cut off from one another instead of being fed by a single system. Then mow what still comes up. A beech sucker cut every ten days through one growing season gives up. One left alone becomes a sapling with roots of its own and you are starting again.

It also matters when the grind happens. A beech cut in early spring has a full season of stored sugar behind it and sprouts hardest. The same tree taken out in late summer, with the roots already spending down toward dormancy, comes back noticeably thinner the following year. If timing is yours to choose, choose late.

White oak and shagbark hickory stumps take their time

Beech itself grinds pleasantly - even-grained, moderate density, no ropey fiber. The other two big trees around here do not. White oak feeds slowly and steadily and dulls a set of teeth over the length of a job. Shagbark hickory is worse again, dense and stringy, and a large one can run to twice the time a maple of the same size would.

That is why we ask the species before quoting rather than just the width. A thirty-inch beech and a thirty-inch hickory look identical in a photograph and are not remotely the same afternoon's work.
