Four acres of bottom ground, one dry week to grind in

These are big custom builds on three and a half to four acre tracts, most of them finished between 2018 and 2023, and the land was opened up to the river edge before the foundations went in. What is left is a lot of open fescue, a handful of kept shade trees, and the stumps of everything that did not stay.

The soil is the catch. Cumberland bottom is river-laid and it keeps water in the top foot for days after the rest of the county has dried. A machine crossing three hundred feet of that to reach a cottonwood stump leaves tracks the mower will find for a year.

Which is why the problem people actually describe on the phone is not the stump at all. It is that the last contractor tore the yard up getting to it.

Two or three dry days with some wind is usually enough on the upper part of a tract. Nearer the bank it takes longer. If you want the yard right for something specific - a wedding, a closing, a family weekend - give us that date and we will work backwards from it rather than promising you the first slot on the board.

The upside of bottom ground is that once it is dry it grinds beautifully. There is no rock in river silt, so the wheel runs at depth without the jarring you get on hill ground, and a big stump comes out faster here than the same tree would three miles inland.

These lots carry two hundred feet and more of river frontage, and the ground does not stop level at the edge; it rolls off. Saturated bank soil under a machine on a slope is how equipment ends up in the water, so thirty feet back from the drop is where we stop unless the ground has gone genuinely hard.

There is a second reason to leave bank stumps be. Sycamore, cottonwood and willow roots are doing structural work on that edge. Taking the visible wood is fine. Chasing the lateral system out toward the water pulls the reinforcement out of a bank the Cumberland is already working on, and the county's own hazard plan counts repetitive flood losses along this river for a reason.

Getting a grinder down Sam Beasley Road

The route in is a couple of miles of Sam Beasley Road off McMurry Boulevard West and then the turn onto River Front Estates Lane, which ends in a cul-de-sac. There are twenty-one addresses on the lane and no through traffic, so the road itself is easy - but a cul-de-sac is a poor place to discover you cannot turn a truck and trailer with a grinder on the back.

We scout that before the day. On tracts this size the yard entrance usually gives us more room than the street does, and dropping the machine at the driveway and tracking it in beats a five-point turn between two mailboxes. If you have a gate at the road, tell us the clear width rather than the gate width; the posts are what matter.

Cottonwood and walnut stump spoil on Sam Beasley Road

Eastern cottonwood is the fastest wood in the county to grind and the worst for volume. A four-foot cottonwood will fill a wheelbarrow twenty times over and the chips come off wet and heavy. On four acres that is good news rather than bad - there is field edge to spread it thin on, which is the exact opposite of the situation on a small lot in town.

Black walnut is the exception, and it grows along these field edges. Walnut grindings carry juglone, and spread around tomatoes, peppers or young ornamentals they will stunt or kill them. When a walnut comes out here we keep its spoil separate and put it somewhere it cannot do any harm, or load it out.
